At two modern plants in Kragerø, Norway, Weifa produces active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and finished products in compliance with the most stringent industry standards. Weifa’s strong reputation for reliability and quality is founded here.
The plants in Kragerø make up essential elements of the company’s fully integrated offering. By having access to own production facilities, Weifa can provide its customers and partners with high-quality products at all times. In combination with well-proven logistics and other services, this makes Weifa a trusted partner to demanding customers all over the world. Own manufacturing also enables swift validation of new products and formulations that come out of Weifa’s R & D pipeline. Both plants are tested and approved according to the most stringent industry standards.
The metformin plant
In 2002, Weifa opened the world’s most modern and efficient GMP-approved plant for production of Metformin HCl, an active pharmaceutical ingredient in first-line treatment of diabetes II. The production line is the largest in the world of its kind. In a strictly controlled process, metformin is synthesised and processed to provide among the purest and best free-flowing qualities in the market. From this plant, Weifa serves more than 30 leading pharmaceutical companies, commanding approximately eight percent of the global market for metformin. To meet different customer requirements, the plant produces metformin in the form of powder and direct compressible granulate, as well as tablets. Current capacity is 3000 MT/year, but the plant is prepared for easy upgrade to 6000 MT. Weifa’s metformin plant was FDA-approved in 2008.
The general plant
Weifa’s other plant in Kragerø is a multi-purpose facility for production of analgesics, nutraceuticals and a number of other consumer health products. Weifa’s leading analgesic brands Paracet (paracetamol) and Ibux (ibuprofen) make up 70 per cent of the volume. The plant also produces APIs for the global alkaloid market, serving more than 20 leading pharmaceutical companies worldwide. The plant is certified according to the standards of Good Manufacturing Practices – GMP – for production and quality control of pharmaceutical preparations.
A new site strategy is developed for the plant, further strengthening Weifa’s ability to deliver high quality products in a cost-effective manner. This involves the installation of a new production line, streamlining and general modernisation.
