Continuous and targeted research and development is central to Weifa’s strategy. Efforts are directed at two key areas – healthy living and therapeutic treatment. Our highly skilled R&D organisation is geared for partnership across all stages of the R & D value chain.
Based on a strong legacy of achievements, Weifa is continuously developing its extensive R&D expertise in specific fields of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. Pain and diabetes management have been particular therapeutic focus areas. The R&D work is fully integrated across the value chain, and as a flexible and mid-sized company we are able to respond swiftly to changes and new demands. We extend our product portfolio through own development, co-development as well as in-licensing.
Healthy living
In the consumer health sector we focus on bringing to market products that promote health, prevent illness and treat common health complaints. Our expertise in line extension and OTC switch has been key to the remarkable success of brands like Paracet and Ibux, which dominate the Norwegian market for analgesics. As we extend our presence in the Nordic region, we will focus on OTC drug products as well as nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals and medical devices. “Bra!”, our new series of well-documented nutraceuticals, demonstrates Weifa’s ability to bring new products to the market in highly competitive product segments.
Therapeutic treatment
In the area of therapeutic treatment, we focus on developing products that meet the medical needs of patients and provide effective relief from illness. R&D activities in this area range from prescription drug products (Rx) and drug substance (API) synthesis development to drug discovery and innovative formulations. A modern specialised laboratory is dedicated to the development of new APIs, primarily within diabetes treatment and opioid analgesics. We also develop new patentable drugs, primarily through new forms of delivery (VAFD – value-added finished dose)

Professional partnerships are central to our R&D strategy. We know the international pharmaceutical community and we know our strengths and how to match them with the right professional partners. An extensive network of partners contributes to our development projects, including several contract research organisations (CROs). Our highly skilled R&D organisation is geared for partnership across the different stages of product development – from market research and new product conceptualisation through product- and process development, manufacturing and control to clinical research and regulatory strategy.
